KICK
BUTT -- A Stop Smoking
Program

For most people, the absolute worst way to attempt
to deal with a smoking habit is through the use of willpower.
Willpower really doesn't exist. Like your moods and emotions,
what "willpower" you do have, fluctuates. One day it
is strong. The next day may be a down day and "willpower"
fades. It is usually neither consistent nor effective.
Among stop-smoking procedures there are countless methods, programs,
substitute products, pills, chewing gums, self-help tapes and
books, etc.. Many are designed to help build up your personal
power to resist or overcome the addiction. Hypnotherapy
does not work at achieving the strength to resist. It is designed
to eliminate the desire. Instead of giving up something that you
enjoy (a sacrifice), your goal is to be rid of something that
isn't wanted - a much more agreeable position psychologically.
Since smoking is both physical and mental, success in a stop-smoking
effort must change not only your mental attitude, but your physical
reaction. Through hypnosis
it is possible to change the taste and smell of a cigarette from
pleasurable to unpleasurable. When this is accomplished, cravings
and withdrawal symptoms are avoided. A bad tasting medicine is
a good example. When a you stop taking this horrible tasting medicine
there are no withdrawal symptoms; and there is no need to compensate
for the lack of the medicine through overeating, sucking hard
candies, etc.
In many cases, effective cessation of smoking can be achieved
in a single session. Some people additional sessions may be required.
In some situations, a gradual reduction in the number of cigarettes
smoked may prove more beneficial. 0f the many options available,
we will select the most appropriate program for you.
The "KICK BUTT"
program is available in private sessions or adult and teen groups
of 4 to 10 people. You can join a group or bring your own group.
Private sessions may be more advantageous for some individuals.
These sessions are more flexible to deal with personalized causes
of the smoking habit, the gratification provided, the characteristics
of the clients and similar matters not fitting group work.
During your session or group, we will determine what personal
needs are being satisfied by smoking. Some smokers seek to fill
a need to nurture themselves - lessen loneliness or get a "pickup"
at the start of or during the day. Others feel smoking will relieve
stress or provide moments of relaxation. Still more feel cigarette
smoking makes social contacts more comfortable. Understanding
the reasons why, when and where you smoke allows you to break
the association these situations have with smoking and add healthy,
new behaviors.
The "KICK BUTT"
program helps you to see yourself as a nonsmoker, free from past
effects of the habit, filled with new health, energy an vitality.
You see cigarettes, in your mind, as unappealing, bad tasting,
foul smelling and otherwise revolting. You begin to see yourself
with clean breath, healthy appearance and sensitive tastes, looking
healthier, more active, in better physical condition, with easier
breathing, stronger lungs and similar advantages.
Weight issues are also addressed. What I call "Twinkie
Attacks", are not necessary when you quit smoking. Not smoking
doesn't make you gain weight. Overeating does. Remember the "bad
medicine", when you give up something you do not want or
need, you don't feel deprived and you don't have to replace it
with other habits, such as overeating. Changing how you feel about
cigarettes eliminates the need to overeat and gain weight.
Once you have achieved success it is necessary to reinforce the
programming that led to the cessation of smoking. Smoking habits
are acquired over a long period of time. Even though you have
ceased smoking, the habit is likely to still be active. But like
most activities, if not used, it tends to fade and disappear.
As part of the "KICK BUTT"
program, you will receive an audio cassette to reinforce the programming
during the period required for the habit to be gone. The cassette
also includes a relaxation program to teach your body to relax.
Stress is the major reason most people resume smoking. Consistent
use of the relaxation program, helps reduce your stress and reinforces
your success as a nonsmoker.
